New Era Archives PEI is so-named to reflect several themes. Archives in a digital age are increasingly making descriptions of holdings, if not images of holdings, accessible on-line, in order to facilitate research and grow the knowledge base of clients near and far. While we specialize in the western half of Prince Edward Island, Canada, our information has wider applications and we pride ourselves in being a starting point for your genealogical research for all of PEI. Also, when the only extant copy of The New Era newspaper - signed by an early Summerside resident in 1875 - was added to our Archival holdings, it re-affirmed for us the continuing role of real world archives in a new electronic era. Nothing trumps seeing the original document on site. Our New Era Archives is an example of the new serving the old serving you the archival client.
Our searchable material is of use to genealogists, historians and people interested in PEI's past. It includes Summerside Business Directories, Telephone Directories, and the Rural Directory for Prince County published in the Cummins Atlas c1928. There are beautiful web versions of the books Past and Present of Prince Edward Island (1906) and Down at the Shore by R. Allan Rankin. Jean's References to Businesses and People are a mini-reference library of brief newspaper notations about newsworthy changes in the life of the town. Also included are transcriptions of Lowell Huestis' CJRW Radio Show Those Were The Days, along with MacNaught History Centre and Archives' directory of over 5000 digital images, and J. Clinton Morrison Jr.'s raw data research on PEI immigrants and emigrants in the 1800's featuring thousands of entries bearing the overall name: A Century of Farewells.
Search nearly all our databases by keyword, or by name. It's easy to use, and will save hours of effort compared to researching the actual copies. You'll be surprised at the many uses and the variety of information.
