Vertical File

The MacNaught History Centre and Archives maintains a vertical file consisting mainly of photocopied newspaper articles that have been printed since January 2001 about matters of local interest. Older articles from newspapers, magazines, or other printed sources are added as opportunities arise. These files will grow in extent and value as the years pass.

There are three sections to the vertical file. The folders arranged by subject, with the focus being Summerside, form the largest portion of the file [view listing]. The other sections are family files, predominately of the Summerside area, and the community files in which information about other Prince County communities is kept.

We are also in the process of developing some unique databases. They include:

1. Industry and Commerce Database: Newspaper descriptions of early businesses in the town of Summerside for the years 1874 to1908, as well as references in various local directories from 1864 to 1935.

2. Newspaper references, arranged by subject, to the early growth and affairs of Summerside, predominately 1865 to 1910. Currently in handwritten form.

3. Obituaries of some prominent people of this geographic area. Transcribed and available for a small fee [view listing].
