Wanda Wyatt (Series 2) - MHCA0001

Title
Correspondence

Dates
1900-1997

Physical desc.
1.32 m of textual records

Scope/Content
This series is comprised of the personal correspondence generated by Miss Wanda Wyatt over her lifetime. She wrote home extensively while she attended the Edgehill School from 1908-13, and then the Royal Victoria College in Montreal from 1913-1917. Retained correspondence is relatively light from that time until 1940 with the exception of 1929, the year of her five-month world-cruise.

There are letters addressed jointly to Wanda and Dorothy or "the Misses Wyatt" during the years of World War II. The number (ca.150) received from young men in the service is an indication of the letter campaign the sisters carried on in wartime. Miss Wyatt kept in touch for decades with two air force officers John Bryant and Bruce Powell who boarded at the Wyatt house in 1943. Correspondence from 1950-1980 is also quite extensive, but a noticeable drop occurs after 1980.

Other correspondence includes letters to Dorothy Archibald from 1962-69. During the years 1965-1974, Mrs. Archibald was a live-in companion to Miss Wyatt and they wrote to one another while taking separate trips. There is correspondence dated 1963-1980 to and from Dr. Melvin Page, a dental specialist in Florida whom she consulted about her health. There are typed second copies of letters she wrote after 1950 about property and estate holdings, household and automobile expenditures, magazine subscriptions and donations. This series also contains invitations, telegrams, and greeting cards.

There is a typed, unsigned letter to Arthur Brennan from Horace Roberts in November 1946 asking him to secure a birth certificate for Dottie.
