City of Summerside Historical Collection - MHCA0016 Title City of Summerside Historical Collection Dates 1903-1993, Photocopied [197-] Physical desc. 1.3m of textual records and other materials Bio/Admin History The town of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, assumed full corporate status 18 April 1877. For approximately twenty years prior to that, the growing community had functioned under a series of local ordinances, which culminated in limited powers under the Town and Villages Act in 1875. The town meetings were held in various halls until 1885 when the new Market House on the corner of First and Central Streets doubled as a civic building. In 1915, a new brick and stone structure on Summer Street became the location of the town departments. When it burned in 1955, the Town council and its administrative offices found a home in the former Post Office constructed in 1886 on Summer Street and still occupies those premises in 2002. The town officially became a city in 1995 after the amalgamation with the adjacent communities of St. Eleanors and Wilmot. Custodial history Town officials or employees gradually accumulated the items over time. It is assumed that some were donated and others were deliberately collected. When the MacNaught History Centre and Archives opened in 2000, the articles that comprise this collection were sent to the new facility. Scope/Content The collection consists of textual materials along with 3 postcards; 10 photographs, including 4 aerial views of Summerside; and an audiocassette containing interviews with Dr. Archie McMurdo and Mr. Ernie Morrison. Printed items include photocopies of pages from a 1903 book of PEI photos, a 1965 special issue of the Journal-Pioneer, a 1958 road map and tourist guide, and two Chamber of Commerce area profiles for the period 1985-91.
