February is set aside each year in Canada to draw special attention to
our diverse heritage and to honour and celebrate who we are as a people
and a country. Wyatt Heritage Properties is ready to celebrate with a
number of events that mark local and national heritage. The public is
extended a warm invitation to be part of each of these events and
discover that heritage is community. Heritage is fun.
Wyatt Heritage Properties' Historic Trivia: Monday, February 4, 1:30 pm,
Chapman Centre, Summerset Manor, 205 Lefurgey Avenue. Monday, February
11, 1:30 pm, Wedgewood Manor, 310 Brophy Avenue, Summerside.
You are invited to join with the residents of Summerset and Wedgewood
Manors in having fun with historic trivia. Do you know when Prince
Edward Island adopted its flag, or what the line Goosie, Goosie Gander
means, or what dance was popular in the 1920s? This is an opportunity
to gather some friends and neighbours together for a great afternoon of
laughs and learning.
Historic Places Initiative Ceremony: Thursday, February 28,
7:30 pm, Lefurgey Cultural Centre, 205 Prince Street. In 2007, Wyatt Heritage
Properties produced historical profiles for twenty-six historic properties within the City of
Summerside for the Canadian Register of Historic Places website. This enables the rich heritage
of the buildings to be enjoyed by all Canadians. This is a major accomplishment for a small
city with such a wealth of historic architecture and is part of an ongoing process. The City of
Summerside wishes to acknowledge and pay tribute to these twenty-six property owners who are
stewards of Summerside's built heritage. You are asked to be part of the occasion. Light refreshments will be served.
Flag Day Celebrations: February 15, 10 am, Parkside School, Summerside.
We are Canadian! That is the spirit of the City of Summerside and Wyatt
Heritage Properties' Canadian Flag Day celebrations. February 15th is
the anniversary of Canada adopting the red and white Maple Leaf flag
that gives Canadians their identity. Wyatt Heritage Properties will join
with the staff and students of Parkside Elementary School to make it an
uplifting anniversary party. There will be a vignette, lots of singing,
dignitaries, flag raising, as well as a few surprises. Parkside
students and staff along with Wyatt Heritage Properties staff invite you
to come be part of Flag Day celebrations and feel the excitement of
being Canadian. The celebration will be held in the new school gym.
Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation Awards: Monday,
February 18, 7 pm, Eptek Art and Culture Centre, Harbourfront Drive,
Summerside. Eptek is the host site for this year's provincial heritage
awards that recognizes the efforts of Islanders in recording historic
information through writing, and historic architectural preservation and
overall heritage promotion.
Archival Jewels: Tuesday, February 19, 2-8:30 pm. MacNaught History
Centre and Archives, 75 Spring Street, Summerside. MacNaught History
Centre and Archives which has the mandate to preserve and promote the
documentary heritage of Summerside and Prince County is eager to
introduce to the public its wonderful acquisitions of 2007. Stop by the
archives during the above hours and see the written documents of the
first Summerside family, Daniel Green, the Noonan Family history and
more. If you have never visited an archive before, archivist Fred Horne
and assistant archivist Jean MacKay will be eager to tell you what an
archive is all about. This is a good opportunity to discover history is
life stories.
Mayor's Tea: Summerside City Hall, 275 Fitzroy Street, Summerside,
Friday, February 22nd, 1:30 to 3 pm. Drop in at historic City Hall for a
cup of tea with Mayor Basil Stewart and his council. The Prince County
recipients of Prince Edward Island Heritage Awards will be again
acknowledged and honoured. There will be historic vignettes, characters
in costume, historic display boards, and some good conversation with
neighbours and friends. Please be sure to make the Mayor's Tea part of
your day. Everyone cordially invited.
